About
Malaysia's data is spread across ministries, statutory bodies, universities, companies and international organisations. Most of it is public. A lot of it is genuinely hard to find, because it is described in twenty different ways across a hundred different websites.
This directory answers one question: where can I get data about this in Malaysia? It does not store the data. It records what exists, who publishes it, and how you get to it.
Today it lists 56 resources from 48 publishers across 20 categories, reached through 164 endpoints. That is a starting point, not a finished thing. It gets better as people add to it.
What is indexed
Anything that helps someone get hold of Malaysian data: APIs, CSV and Parquet files, spreadsheets, GIS layers, WFS and ArcGIS services, databases, bulk downloads, searchable registries, dashboards, maps, statistical releases, PDF reports, research repositories and request-only or paid datasets.
A source does not need to be free to belong here. If a commercial dataset or a controlled-access registry is useful to know about, we list it and describe how access works. We do not bypass paywalls, logins or eligibility checks.
What is not indexed
- Copies of the data. We point at publishers; the data stays theirs.
- Datasets that cannot lawfully be shared or described.
- Direct access to systems that were not meant to be public.
- Personal data, credentials, or anything that would help someone break into a service.
- Marketing pages dressed up as data.
How to read a listing
Each resource has one page with a stable URL. It tells you what the data is, who publishes it, how to reach it, what formats exist, what geography and time it covers, and when we last checked that the listing is still accurate.
Two things are worth being precise about, because people get them wrong constantly:
- Access is not the same as licence. Public means you can see it. It does not mean you can redistribute it. We label access and licence separately, and we never infer an open licence from public availability.
- Verified is not a quality claim. When we say a listing was verified on a date, we mean a human or an approved check confirmed the resource and the described way in still exist. It says nothing about whether the numbers are any good, or whether they suit your purpose.
Where we don't know something — the licence, the update frequency, the exact coverage — the listing says so rather than guessing. That is why you will see "not recorded" in a few places. It is deliberate.
Who maintains it
The directory is an open project by Stratum, a Malaysian technology studio. Stratum started it and maintains the catalogue, but the catalogue is community-owned: it lives in a public Git repository, anyone can propose a change, and every change is reviewed in the open before it ships.
The directory is publisher-neutral. Stratum's clients, partners and commercial relationships get no special treatment — not in ranking, not in description, not in placement. That is written into the editorial policy in the repository, and the search code has no way to express a commercial preference.
Licensing
The directory's own metadata — the names, descriptions, categories and links we write — is released under CC0 1.0. Take it, reuse it, no permission needed.
That licence covers our metadata only. It does not relicense a single byte of anyone else's data, and it grants no rights over the datasets, APIs or reports we point at. For those, follow the original publisher's terms.
